Cu 10 ani in urma am fost mult prea preocupat de Helloween, Savatage & Dream Theater ca sa am timp, ochi si urechi si pentru U2. Clipurile vazute pe MTV & VH1 si unele piese auzite la radio nu mi-au trezit interesul pentru ei.

Timpul a trecut si s-a produs o schimbare. Azi cred ca U2 e una dintre cele mai mari formatii din toate timpurile, daca nu cea mai mare… De fapt, ei au fost mari & interesanti tot timpul, doar eu a trebuit sa mai cresc ca sa-mi dau seama.

No Line On the Horizon, cel mai recent material U2, lansat pe 27 februarie 2009, este un album magnific, un exemplu de imbinare perfecta:

- a contemporanului cu traditia,
- a trairilor fara pretentii [pop] cu trairile profunde [rock],
- a spiritului expansiv cu cel contemplativ…

1. NO LINE ON THE HORIZON

O piesa energica, “cruda” cu un caracter meditativ.
Bono alterneaza exprimarea sensibila cu cea “apasata”.

2. MAGNIFICENT

Sound-uri ultra-contemporane intr-un intro “rece”.
Dinamica & stil rafinate, atat instrumental, cat si vocal.

Nu ma feresc sa spun ca este o piesa de inchinare,
dedicata lui Dumnezeu. Un fragment:

I was born to sing for you

I didn’t have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice
From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise …

3. MOMENT OF SURRENDER

O piesa care are toate sansele sa tulbure orice suflet adormit.
Sectia ritmica este aproape obsedant-repetitiva, creand o stare de “levitatie”.
Refrenul deschide piesa si lumineaza atmosfera.

“It’s not if I believe in love
But if love believes in me
Oh, believe in me”

Oooh, da… Bono puncteaza cu o maiestrie de invidiat.

4. UNKNOWN CALLER

Incepe foarte simplu, intro-ul este bazat pe un motiv de chitara.
Piesa “se arata” progresiv si se dezvolta in complicitate cu ascultatorul.
Strofa e calma, dar refrenul aduce un indemn apasat:

“Go, shout it out, rise up
Oh, oh
Escape yourself, and gravity
Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak
Shush now
Oh, oh
Force quit and move to trash”

5. I’LL GO CRAZY IF I DON’T GO CRAZY TONIGHT

O piesa mai usoara, cu un refren simpatic si energic,
cu versuri mai putin “usoare”:

“Every generation gets a chance to change the world
Pity the nation that won’t listen to your boys and girls
Cos the sweetest melody is the one we haven’t heard
Is it true that perfect love drives out all fear?
The right to appear ridiculous is something I hold dear
Oh, but a change of heart comes slow”

6. GET ON YOUR BOOTS

Primul single de pe “No line…”, peste trei minute de energie cu inflexiuni melodice neasteptate, bantuitoare, agasante si aproape enervante. Strofa-i bazata pe sectia ritmica – un preludiu sec pentru un refren cu accente psihedelice.

7. STAND UP COMEDY

Energia pura curge in continuare in cea mai buna traditie rock’n'roll.
Piesa e simpla iar refrenul “prinde”.

8. FEZ–BEING BORN

Piesa a opta poarta o amprenta electro, dar nici chitara nu-i neglijata.
Elementele repetitive isi pierd din insistenta la refren. Unele momente
sunt de o luminozitate aparte.

9. WHITE AS SNOW

Este una dintre acele piese care te cuceresc instantaneu. Un “monolog”
intim, cu caracter de reflectie.

10. BREATHE

Inapoi la rock’n'roll-ul crud si “nemachiat”, cu o linie melodica memorabila.
Daca John Wayne ar fi ascultat albumul, piesa asta i-ar fi placut…

11. CEDARS OF LEBANON

O piesa de o intensitate emotionala rara, cufundata in calm si echilibru.
Parca ne-ar descrie linistea si tot ce-i dincolo de ea…

“Choose your enemies carefully cos they will define you
Make them interesting cos in some ways they will mind you
They’re not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friend”
